Six years ago I found myself playing with my great niece and winded and out of breath. Later that evening I felt like I had been hit by a bus. That’s the day I decided I needed to do something different to try and loose weight for good this time because for all my adult years I would lose and regain like a yo-yo and I knew that wasn’t good for me. I knew that one day I would have grandchildren that I would want to be able to keep up with. So I did research and decided weight loss surgery was the answer I was looking. It took a lot of work and research. Nutrition classes and counseling. Sleep apnea and Cpap use and I was ready. My my insurance changed and I had to put things on hold. That’s when I meant Dr. Linden Karas with Avita. I went to her seminar booked an appointment and was scheduled for surgery in October 2017. My BMI was 52 day of surgery. I was determined to have a “normal “ BMI. After surgery I followed what I learned in nutrition classes and have walk 12,000 steps or more 6 to 7 days a week. I work out 3 to 4 times a week. With support from Dr Karas and her staff almost four years post op my BMI is now 24 and I couldn’t be happier! I have lost a total of 165 pounds and have worked very hard to maintain my weight loss. I no longer have sleep apnea and my A1c went from 6 to 4.8. I’m so happy to have made all my goals. I also have completed 4 5k’s getting ready to complete my 5th with all three of my grandchildren the youngest I will have on my back in her backpack, while pushing the other two in the stroller. My journey doesn’t stop it’s a life style change that I am forever grateful for.

My name is Julie and I had RNY Gastric Bypass on 8-17-20 and it was one of the best decisons I’ve ever made. We live in a world where physical beauty has become priority and many people focus on the number on the scale and outward appearance. Although I have lost a considerable amount of weight, and I’m not yet to my final goal, I am here to talk to you about not what I’ve lost, but what I’ve gained. Dr Karas has gifted me the most amazing tool to help me reach my goals, and I am so grateful for her and her staff. Since surgery I am able to walk for miles now, get on the floor and play with my grandson, go hiking. I can walk up and down flights of stairs without gasping for air. I can fit on roller coaster rides,, and airplane seats now without worry and anxiety. My blood pressure is normal again, I no longer have GERD. I have gained the freedom to live my life to the absolute fullest and I couldn’t be happier!⁣

My daughter is currently going through the process to get approved for surgery and having gone through that process myself, it feels good to be able to encourage her through it. The Mallspital group on Facebook is an invaluable tool as well. The biggest thing I’ve learned is that this is not an easy journey, and that you need to have a support system. Take it one day at a time, be kind to yourself,, and focus on what you’re gaining and don’t put so much stock into the number on that scale. My name is CAROLYN J FLYNN SHIREMAN, and a patient of Dr. Karas. I had the bypass surgery and it has been the best thing I have every done for myself and my health.

Hi! My name is Michelle Gallant – I go by Shellie! Soooo I was extremely unhappy with my body as are thousands of people out there. My husband had a consultation for surgery with the amazing Dr. Linden Karas and I tagged along. After hearing everything, I ended up going to all of his appointments and classes with him! I have Crohn’s Disease. I had recently had a 10” bowel resection so I asked my Gastroenterologist about the surgery and I was informed he didn’t recommend it. Well, my husband had asked Dr. Karas on one of his appointments to see her and she said ABSOLUTELY! I was beyond excited and started my journey right then!⁣

My journey started at 250 pounds; a top size 2XL and pant size 20-22. ⁣
On January 13, 2020 I was elated when it became my turn to “go under the knife” I was going to “get skinny” and more important than that….HEALTHY! I would never change the surgery or Dr. Karas or her team for the world! She is absolutely amazing! I just weighed myself and I am now 159!!!! I would personally like to get to 135 but that will come in time! Top size is now S-M and pant size is 8!!!!!!!!!!! No one recognizes me now – lots of double takes! I would do it all again in a heartbeat! Thank you again Doc and your amazing and wonderful team!!!!
